Stepping into a new classroom as a supply teacher is a unique professional challenge. You are often walking into a room where relationships have already been formed, routines are established, and your presence represents a shift in the status quo. While most lessons run smoothly, every educator eventually encounters the moment where a pupil simply […]
Stepping into a new classroom as a supply teacher often feels like a fresh start every morning, but it can occasionally present a moment of pure panic. You might be a specialist in Secondary Physics, only to find the folder on the desk is for a Year 9 French lesson, or perhaps you are a […]
One of the most appealing aspects of working as a supply teacher is the autonomy it offers over your professional life. For many educators in the North East, the shift away from a permanent contract is driven by a desire to reclaim their schedule and focus on the parts of teaching they genuinely enjoy. However, […]
One of the most frequent questions we hear from educators considering a move into temporary work is whether they will lose their professional voice. There is a common misconception that stepping away from a permanent contract means waving goodbye to your preferences and simply going wherever you are told. In reality, the modern landscape of […]
Walking into a new staffroom for the first time can feel a little like the first day of school all over again. You might not know where the best kettle is, which photocopier actually works, or where the Year 5 group hides the spare glue sticks. Preparation is the secret to turning that initial uncertainty […]
Stepping into a new classroom in the North East can feel like a fresh start every morning, but that professional excitement quickly turns to a knot in the stomach when you realise the teacher has not left a plan. You have checked the desk, glanced at the whiteboard, and even peeked inside the top drawer, […]
Industrial action in the education sector creates a complex environment for school leaders and supply staff alike. When disputes between unions and the government lead to walkouts, headteachers face the difficult task of balancing the safety of pupils with the rights of their permanent workforce. For those working through an agency, the situation often brings […]
The sudden shift from single-word judgements to a more nuanced report card system marks a significant turning point for school leadership teams across the North East. For years, the pressure of a ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ label dictated almost every operational decision, including how temporary cover was managed. Now, with the Department for Education moving towards […]
Walking into a new classroom in the North East, your primary focus is usually on the lesson plan, the seating chart, and the school bell times. However, the unique position of a supply teacher often means pupils see you as a neutral, safe adult, which can sometimes lead to an unexpected and serious disclosure. When […]
The life of a supply teacher is built on a foundation of flexibility, which is arguably its greatest draw. One moment you are enjoying a quiet morning, and the next, you are heading to a local primary school to cover a last minute absence. However, life rarely follows a perfect script. There are times when, […]
Stepping into a new classroom as a supply teacher brings a unique mix of excitement and nerves. Whether you are a Newly Qualified Teacher looking for your first role or a seasoned educator returning to the North East school circuit, one hurdle stands before every assignment: the Disclosure and Barring Service check. It is the […]
Walking into a new staffroom in the North East can feel a little like a first date every single morning. You have just a few minutes to prove your reliability, your pedagogical skill, and your ability to fit into a school’s unique culture. While a CV gets you through the door, a supply teacher professional […]
Every school leader in the North East knows the sinking feeling that comes with an early morning phone call. Whether it is a seasonal flu sweep through the staff room or a planned maternity leave, managing teacher absence is a constant balancing act between the school budget and the quality of education provided to pupils. […]
Headteachers and school business managers in the North East often find themselves in a race against the clock. When a member of staff calls in sick at seven in the morning, the priority shifts instantly from long term planning to immediate classroom stability. While some schools try to manage their own banks of cover staff, […]
When a school leader picks up the phone to request emergency cover, their primary concern is rarely just about finding someone who can deliver a lesson. The unspoken priority, the one that keeps headteachers awake at night, is the safety of the children in their care. In the fast-moving environment of North East education, knowing […]
Managing the daily rhythm of a school in the North East requires more than just a well organised timetable. When a teacher calls in at seven in the morning to report an illness, the priority shifts instantly to maintaining stability for the pupils and ensuring the day continues without disruption. For headteachers and school business […]
Stepping into a new classroom as a supply teacher brings a unique set of challenges, especially when you are tasked with supporting autistic pupils you have only just met. While permanent staff have months to build rapport and understand specific triggers, a guest teacher often has only a few minutes to get their bearings before […]
Stepping into a new school for the first time can feel a little like the first day of term for a pupil. There is the inevitable search for the staff car park, the brief moment of confusion at the secure entry system, and the quiet hope that the staff room has decent tea. A supply […]
Walking into a new classroom in the North East often feels like a balancing act between maintaining the school routine and establishing your own professional presence. While your primary focus is on the pupils, the school gates represent another vital part of the job: the parents and carers. For many supply staff, the moment the […]
Walking into a new classroom in a North East school often feels like stepping onto a film set where someone has hidden the script. You have the lesson plan, the students are filing in, and then you see it: the interactive whiteboard. It might be a brand you have never used, or perhaps the login […]
Walking into a new classroom as a supply teacher brings a unique set of challenges and rewards. In the North East, where school communities are tight-knit and diverse, you might find yourself supporting a broad spectrum of learners at a moment’s notice. Understanding the specific SEND classifications used in UK schools is one of the […]
Walking into a new classroom is always a challenge, but for those entering a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities setting, the stakes often feel higher. In these classrooms, the bond between a child and their family is frequently the cornerstone of their daily stability. As a temporary member of staff, you are not just stepping […]
Walking into a new SEND classroom for the first time brings a unique mix of adrenaline and responsibility. For supply teachers in the North East, these environments are incredibly rewarding, but they also require a different set of communication tools than a standard mainstream setting. When you are only there for a day or a […]
Walking into a new classroom as a supply teacher is a bit like stepping onto a moving train. You have to find your balance quickly, understand the rhythm of the room, and identify who needs your help the most. For many pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), the sensory environment of that classroom […]
The 7:00 am phone call is a sound every school leader in the North East knows only too well. Whether it is a seasonal flu sweep through the staff room or a sudden personal emergency, unplanned staff absence is an inevitable part of running a school. While the disruption to lesson continuity and the sudden […]
Every educator knows the feeling of walking into a new classroom for the first time. The layout is different, the seating plan is unfamiliar, and the names are new. Yet, amidst the logistical shift of supply work, one constant anchor remains: the absolute safety and wellbeing of the children in that room. Safeguarding compliance is […]
There is a specific kind of silence that happens when you are sat at the kitchen table in your best teaching gear, coffee in hand, waiting for the phone to ring. Or perhaps worse, the phone does ring, but it is a notification telling you that today’s booking has been cancelled at the final moment. […]
Walking into a new school as a supply teacher brings a unique set of challenges. You are navigating new corridors, learning the names of colleagues, and trying to get a feel for the classroom dynamic, all within the first hour of the day. Amidst the whirlwind of morning briefings and lesson plans, one individual stands […]
Deciding how to manage your professional relationships is one of the most significant choices you will make when stepping into the world of flexible education. For many teachers in the North East, the question of whether to sign up with one loyal partner or spread their wings across multiple supply agencies is a common talking […]
Walking into a new staffroom in any school can feel a little like the first day of term all over again. You do not know where the good mugs are kept, the photocopier has a personal vendetta against you, and you are trying to memorise thirty new names before the first bell rings. While the […]
The phone rings at 7:15 am and your instinct is to jump. For many educators, the drive to be helpful and the need for a steady income create a permanent “yes” reflex. You want to be the reliable professional the school remembers, the person who saves the day when a flu bug hits the department. […]
Walking into a new staffroom as a supply teacher can feel a little like being the new student. You have to find the kettle, learn the names of the leads, and figure out the local behaviour policy before the first bell rings. For many educators throughout Durham, Newcastle, and Northumberland, this variety is exactly why […]
There is a specific kind of silence that every supply teacher knows. It happens on those damp Tuesday mornings in November or the sun-drenched weeks in June when the phone stays still and the expected booking never materialises. For professionals across the North East who thrive on the energy of the classroom, these lulls can […]
Many supply teachers accept the rate they are first offered without question. It feels awkward to push back, the agency seems confident, and there is an unspoken sense that negotiating might jeopardise the relationship or the work. So the number is accepted, the booking is confirmed, and the question of whether it was the right […]
There is a significant difference between being a supply teacher who gets occasional bookings and being the one a school thinks of first when cover is needed. The gap between those two positions is not about luck or geography. It is about how deliberately and consistently you manage your professional reputation. Becoming a first call […]
Supply teaching is not one thing. It sits on a spectrum, and where you sit on that spectrum shapes almost everything about your working life: your routine, your relationships, your income, and your sense of professional identity. At one end is day-to-day supply, where you might be in a different school every day, covering absence […]
It takes two minutes. It costs nothing. And it is one of the most consistently overlooked habits that separates supply teachers who get rebooked from those who do not. Leaving clear, useful feedback for the class teacher at the end of a placement is not a bureaucratic nicety. It is a professional act that demonstrates […]
It is a question that comes up regularly, and the honest answer is that it depends. Supply teaching and permanent teaching carry different kinds of stress, and which feels heavier depends significantly on the person experiencing it, their personality, their circumstances, and what they find most depleting. What is worth resisting is the assumption that […]
Ask a school what they want from a supply teacher and the answer is almost always the same: someone they can trust. Not just trust to turn up on time, although that matters, but trust to be professional, to care about the pupils in the room, to use their initiative, and to leave the school […]
It is one of the most unsettling experiences in supply teaching. You are at the front of the room, the work is on the board, and the class simply will not engage. Not one or two pupils pushing back, but a collective wall of resistance. Some are talking. Some are staring at you. Some have […]
Confidence in teaching is not a fixed trait you either have or you do not. It is something that develops, quietly and steadily, through experience, reflection, and the gradual accumulation of lessons you have navigated and classrooms you have won over. For supply teachers, that process has its own particular rhythm. You are not building […]
A behaviour incident in an unfamiliar school is one of the most pressured situations a supply teacher can face. You do not know the pupils, you may not know the procedures, and you are very aware that the way you handle the next few minutes matters. The classroom is watching, and so is your professional […]
There is a persistent myth in teaching that authority and warmth are in opposition. That to be in control of a classroom, you need to be firm to the point of severity, and that any sign of friendliness is an invitation for pupils to misbehave. For supply teachers especially, this myth can lead to a […]
Walking into an unfamiliar school without knowing the behaviour policy can feel daunting. You do not know the reward systems, the consequence structures, or even which pupils have specific support plans. But here is the reassuring truth: the most effective supply teacher behaviour management does not depend on knowing the rulebook. It depends on something […]
Low level disruption is the quiet drain on a lesson. It is not the dramatic outburst or the open refusal to work. It is the persistent chatting, the slow start, the pupil who keeps fiddling with equipment, the gentle tide of off-task behaviour that, left unchecked, gradually pulls the whole room with it. For supply […]
Sunday evening arrives and the familiar feeling settles in. Tomorrow you will walk into a school you may never have visited before, meet a class who do not know you, navigate an unfamiliar building, and be expected to teach effectively from the moment you step through the door. For many supply teachers, this is simply […]
Effective classroom management is the foundation of everything else you do as a teacher. Without it, the best lesson plan in the world falls apart. With it, even an imperfect lesson can still be a productive one. For supply teachers, who walk into unfamiliar classrooms without the advantage of established relationships or shared history with […]
Walking into a new school as a supply teacher involves a lot of rapid adjustment. You are learning names, locating resources, navigating an unfamiliar building and reading a classroom you have never taught before, often all before morning registration is finished. In the midst of all that, it is easy for emergency procedures to fall […]
PPA time, Planning, Preparation and Assessment, is a statutory entitlement for all teachers in maintained schools in England and Wales, including supply teachers. That means that if you are covering a class for a significant portion of the week, you are entitled to a minimum of ten percent of your timetabled teaching time as non-contact […]
If there is one moment in the school day that tests supply teachers more than any other, it is the return from lunch. Pupils come back unsettled, energised, sometimes mid-argument, often hungry for continued social interaction rather than learning. For a permanent class teacher with established routines and relationships, managing that transition is challenging enough. […]
Walking into an unfamiliar classroom is one of the most distinctive challenges in teaching. As a supply teacher, you do it regularly, sometimes at very short notice, with little information about the class, the school culture or the individual pupils in front of you. Establishing yourself quickly, maintaining a productive environment and managing behaviour without […]
Supply teaching offers something that very few careers can match: genuine flexibility over how, where and how much you work. But with that flexibility comes a responsibility to manage your income actively. Unlike a salaried role, your earnings as a supply teacher are directly shaped by the decisions you make, and the teachers who earn […]
Supply teaching can be a genuinely fulfilling career. The variety, the flexibility, the freedom to choose how and where you work; for many teachers, it is exactly the right fit. But for others, there comes a point where something shifts. The work that once felt liberating starts to feel draining. The flexibility that was a […]
Your reputation is one of the most powerful tools you have as a supply teacher. It travels ahead of you into every school you visit, influences how quickly you get booked, and ultimately shapes the kind of career you build. Whether you are just starting out or looking to secure more consistent, higher quality work, […]
One of the greatest freedoms of supply teaching is also one of its biggest challenges: choice. Unlike a permanent role, you have a real say in where you work, what age groups you teach and how much variety or consistency your working week involves. But making those choices strategically, in a way that actively moves […]
Walking into a new classroom is always a little unpredictable. Walking into a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) classroom as a supply teacher, sometimes with less than an hour’s notice, can feel genuinely daunting — even for experienced practitioners. The truth is that with the right preparation and the right mindset, supply teachers can […]
Supply teaching is often talked about as a stepping stone — something you do between permanent roles, or while you figure out what comes next. But for a growing number of teachers in the UK, supply is not a gap to be filled. It is a genuine career choice, and one that can offer real […]
First Class Supply remains committed to promoting fairness and equal treatment for every member of our team, regardless of gender. Pay decisions are based solely on objective factors such as an individual’s experience, qualifications, and the specific requirements of the role. Our gender pay gap continues to be shaped by the structure of our workforce. […]
Supply teaching can be one of the most rewarding ways to work in education. The variety, the flexibility, the chance to make a difference in schools right across your region — it is genuinely fulfilling work. But it comes with its own pressures too. Unpredictable schedules, last minute bookings, unfamiliar classrooms and the constant need […]
Supply teaching offers real flexibility and the chance to work across a variety of schools. But without clear boundaries, it can quickly become overwhelming. If you have ever felt pressured to accept shifts at the last minute, unsure how to say no without damaging your relationship with your agency, or simply exhausted from trying to […]
The school looks different from the moment you arrive. Smaller classes, specialist equipment, sensory spaces integrated into the building design. This is a specialist SEND school, and today you’re the supply teacher. As you sign in, you notice the detailed safeguarding procedures, behaviour support plans and multi-disciplinary team meeting schedule. This placement feels different from […]
You arrive at school. The office hands you a class list with several names highlighted. “Those are your SEN pupils,” the receptionist explains. “Profiles are in the folder.” You glance at the clock. Fifteen minutes until registration. This moment is familiar to every supply teacher working in inclusive classrooms. You want to support every pupil […]
You walk into a Year 5 classroom at 8:45am. The lesson plan looks straightforward enough, but then you notice the note scribbled at the bottom: “Three pupils have EHCPs, two with autism, one with ADHD. See individual profiles in the folder. TA assigned to support.” You open the folder to find dense documentation that would […]
The classroom door opens and thirty pupils look up expectantly. You’re the supply teacher, arriving with limited briefing time and no knowledge of individual pupils’ needs. Then you notice the teaching assistant across the room, already helping a small group settle into their seats. In that moment, you realise this person could be your greatest […]
Walking into a new school as a supply teacher can feel daunting. You don’t know the building layout, the staff, the routines or the systems. When you need help quickly, whether it’s finding a classroom, managing a behaviour incident or accessing the WiFi, knowing exactly who to ask makes all the difference between a smooth […]
The smartboard freezes mid lesson. The projector refuses to connect. The class set of tablets won’t turn on. If you’ve stood in front of thirty expectant faces while your carefully planned digital lesson crumbles around you, you’re not alone. Technology failure in the classroom is one of the most common challenges teachers face, and it […]
Walking into a classroom only to discover that lesson plans are missing, incomplete or completely unclear is one of the most stressful situations any teacher can face. Whether you are a supply teacher covering at short notice, an early career teacher stepping in for a colleague, or a permanent member of staff dealing with an […]
Starting work in a school for the first time can feel overwhelming, especially when you are expected to navigate unfamiliar systems, policies and procedures from day one. Whether you are a supply teacher, teaching assistant, volunteer or newly qualified teacher stepping into a North East classroom, understanding school systems quickly is essential for staying safe, […]
Starting at a new school or managing your first supply placement can feel like stepping into a world with its own language, rhythm and unspoken rules. One of the biggest challenges is getting to grips with the school timetable, understanding when bells ring, and learning the daily routines that keep everything running smoothly. Whether you’re […]
Walking into a new school as a supply teacher can feel overwhelming, especially when you know that safeguarding responsibilities begin the moment you step through the door. Whether this is your first supply placement or you’ve worked across dozens of schools, understanding what you need to know about safeguarding on day one is essential for […]
You walk into a classroom at 8:45am. The pupils don’t know you, you don’t know them, and within five minutes someone has tested every boundary you’ve set. Challenging behaviour is one of the biggest concerns for supply teachers, and it’s completely understandable why. Without the relationships permanent teachers build over weeks and months, you’re starting […]
It happens to every supply teacher. You walk into the classroom, introduce yourself, and within minutes someone’s testing you. A pupil talks over you. Another refuses to sit down. Someone at the back throws a pencil. Your heart rate climbs and you’re thinking: how do I get control of this situation? Boundary testing on your […]
Walking into a classroom as a supply teacher, you’re often met with challenging behaviour. A pupil refuses to sit down, another shouts out repeatedly, and someone else has pushed their work onto the floor. Your instinct might be to manage the behaviour firmly, but what if that behaviour is actually communicating an unmet need? Understanding […]
Stepping into a classroom as a supply teacher can feel daunting, especially when you discover a pupil has an Education, Health and Care Plan. You might only have minutes to read through the document before the lesson begins, yet you’re legally required to follow the provision outlined. This guide will walk you through the practical […]
If you’re a supply teacher looking to develop your skills in supporting pupils with special educational needs, you’re probably wondering where to start. Should you invest in a formal qualification, pick up short awareness courses, or focus on practical strategies you can use straight away? And how do you fit training around the unpredictable schedule […]
If you’ve spent time working with pupils who have special educational needs, whether in supply placements, permanent roles or as a teaching assistant, you’ve developed skills that many teachers never get the chance to build. SEND experience doesn’t just make you a better educator, it makes you more employable, more confident and better prepared for […]
Walking into a new school as a supply teacher means adapting to unfamiliar routines, different expectations and behaviour policies you’ve never seen before. You might have five minutes to skim a document before pupils arrive, or you might be handed a class with no briefing at all. Either way, you’re expected to maintain order, keep […]
Choosing to specialise in SEND supply teaching is a significant career decision. You’ll be working with some of the most vulnerable pupils in our schools, often stepping into classrooms at short notice, and adapting to a wide range of needs and behaviours. It’s rewarding, challenging and not for everyone. If you’re considering this path, you’ll […]
If you’ve spent decades shaping young minds and are now enjoying retirement, you might be wondering whether you can step back into the classroom on your own terms. The short answer is yes. Retired teachers can and do work as supply teachers across the UK, bringing invaluable experience, calm and familiarity with school life to […]
If you have just completed your teacher training, you might be weighing up your options. Should you hold out for a permanent position, or could supply teaching offer a valuable stepping stone into your career? It’s a question many newly qualified teachers ask, and the answer depends on your circumstances, goals and what you need […]
The maths department is short-staffed again. Your Physics teacher is on long-term sick leave. You need a Design & Technology specialist for maternity cover, and applications have been disappointing. Meanwhile, Year 11 exams are approaching, and curriculum continuity is non-negotiable. Should you bring in supply teachers to cover shortage subjects, or hold out for permanent […]
You’ve just received your first payslip through an umbrella company. You worked a full week, calculated what you expected to earn, then saw the net pay figure. It’s significantly less than anticipated. You scan through deductions you don’t understand: Income Tax, National Insurance, “Employer’s NIC,” “Umbrella Margin,” “Holiday Pay Accrual.” If this feels familiar, you’re […]
Teaching in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) as a supply teacher can be one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in education. PRUs support children and young people who have been permanently excluded, are at risk of exclusion, or cannot attend mainstream school for medical, SEMH or behavioural reasons. As a result, PRU classrooms […]
SEN supply teaching can be one of the most rewarding roles in education — but it also requires the right preparation, mindset and practical tools. Whether you’re stepping into a specialist provision, covering in a mainstream classroom with identified needs or supporting on a one-to-one basis, you’ll be expected to adapt quickly, follow safeguarding procedures […]
Covering an EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) class is uniquely rewarding — and uniquely demanding. Children aged 3 to 5 thrive on routine, clear expectations and a warm, consistent approach, so when a supply teacher steps in, they play a crucial role in keeping the class calm, safe and engaged. Whether you’re an experienced practitioner […]
Phonics and early reading are at the heart of EYFS and Key Stage 1 learning. When you’re teaching on supply, you might be asked to lead a phonics session at short notice — sometimes with little or no planning left. That can feel daunting, especially if you’re new to phonics or moving between schools that […]
You’ve arrived at school, collected your classroom key, and checked the teacher’s desk. Nothing. No lesson plan, no worksheets, no indication of what you’re teaching. That sinking feeling is familiar to most supply teachers, but here’s the reassuring truth: this scenario is entirely manageable with the right approach. This guide provides practical, proven strategies to […]
The bell rings. Thirty unfamiliar faces look up expectantly – some curious, some testing, some already chatting. You have seconds to establish yourself as someone worth listening to. No existing relationships, no established routines, just you and that crucial first impression. Building rapport as a supply teacher isn’t about becoming their best friend. It’s about […]
Your phone buzzes at 6:30 AM. It’s the agency: “Can you cover Year 4 at Riverside Primary today?” You’ve got 90 minutes to get ready and walk into a classroom of pupils you’ve never met. The unpredictable nature of supply teaching means mornings can feel chaotic. But experienced supply teachers know that consistent morning habits […]

Teaching is one of those careers that never stands still. New techniques, classroom tools, and educational standards appear constantly — and supply teachers, just like their full-time counterparts, need to keep up. But how do you stay updated with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) when you’re moving between schools and juggling changing timetables? Many supply teachers […]
Why Tax And Pensions Can Feel Complicated For Supply Teachers Supply teaching is valued for its flexibility. You can choose when and where to work, explore different schools, and enjoy more control over your schedule. Yet, that flexibility comes with financial complexity. Unlike permanent teachers, who have payroll teams managing tax and pensions for them, […]
Why Long-Term Connections Matter For Supply Teachers Supply teaching can feel unpredictable. Some teachers enjoy the flexibility, while others worry about the lack of consistency. Schools also rotate through different supply teachers, which can affect stability for pupils and staff. While supply teaching is designed to be flexible, long-term relationships create trust and continuity. Schools […]
Supply teaching offers freedom and variety, but that variety comes with challenges. One day you might be guiding a lively Year 2 class through phonics, and the next you could be standing in front of teenagers tackling science at Key Stage 3. Some teachers find this mix exciting and refreshing, while others worry about the […]
One of the biggest perks of supply teaching is flexibility. You can choose when and where to work, which makes it an attractive option for many teachers. But with flexibility comes a challenge: keeping track of your hours and making sure your pay is correct. Some teachers take a relaxed approach and trust everything will […]
Supply teaching offers flexibility, variety, and the chance to gain valuable classroom experience. But with freedom also comes responsibility. One question supply teachers often ask is whether they need professional indemnity insurance. Some argue schools and agencies already provide cover, while others stress the importance of extra protection. The reality lies somewhere in between. This […]
When teachers consider supply work, pay is often one of the first questions. Many assume agency roles automatically mean lower earnings, while direct hire contracts with schools or local authorities are seen as more secure. The reality is more nuanced. Both routes have pros and cons, and pay structures depend on contracts, regulations, and benefits. […]

Many teachers assume standing out is simply about delivering lessons, but in reality it is about much more. […]
One of the most common questions supply teachers ask is about pay during school breaks. Permanent teachers receive a salary spread across the whole year, which includes paid holidays. But what about supply teachers? The answer depends on the type of contract, the way your pay is structured, and who you work with. This guide […]
